about

Q. You mentioned your group of friends in the inspiration for “1984”. This song, “Hadn’t been for you” seems to delve further back into adolescence perhaps ?
WB. Yes it delves back to teenage years when you're caught between childhood friends who you've grown apart from and late teenage friends who share your interests and introduce you to all sorts of new and exciting stuff.

Q. The line “we marched against the fascists”, sounds like you are referring to the Rock against Racism and ANL movements, were you involved?
WB. Well I went to the first RAR event in Edinburgh in 1978 maybe. I was a teenager and I went with my mate Syd. We got a bus from Glasgow and marched to Craigmillar Park. The Clash were rumoured to be playing. It turned out that they had been arrested in London the night before so Aswad topped the bill instead. Very good they were too and I caught a green 12' single that was thrown by Dennis Bovell from the stage. I cherish it to this day.

Q. The horns here are reminiscent of Otis Redding and elsewhere ( “Autumn Leaves” ) there’s Al Green style horn stabs - so is there a southern soul influence in the Hellfires these days ?
WB. I've always loved the Stax sound and when Ivan joined the band and we got into La Chunky (Glasgow studio) I thought it was important to maximise the potential of the line-up and the studio. I felt it would be great to overdub and create a horn section on these tracks. Ideally we would have got Clare to guest on those recordings but she couldn't make any of the dates so the horns are all Ivan. In saying that Clare's now joined the band so we can recreate the sound live.
