Q. This song has a real groove from the get go - and the guitar lines and horn parts swirl around and mimic each other - it’s an impressive track, are you happy with the outcome , with horns etc. ?
RA. Autumn Leaves has had various incarnations and arrangements. Starting as acoustic, then a mid- tempo vibe with both fiddle and saxes adding to the what is now the two-part guitar solo. Through rehearsals and necessity (Nick, fiddle player left), the guitars took a back to a front seat in the outro and the song gradually developed a more upbeat rhythmic nature when the legendary Anderson/Ferrari rhythm section found a groove built around a great bass-line. Willie and Ivan hooked that into a set of cleverly arranged sax stax soul stabs.
Q. Tell us more about that ending.
RA. So the line was originally played on fiddle and dualling mandolin- and I think at one point we even considered introducing dulcimer, the song would have had a folky feel with all that fiddling and mandolising ( is that a word ?). But the band left Willie and I to own devices, and in that situation , one thing is going to happen ! Yes we transformed it into a Thin Lizzie inspired counterpoint. As an outro we all think it works really well – there’s an element of humour and irony in it too….. of course.
